So you, yes you, the beautiful person reading this, want to start a roleplay? Or maybe you have and you want ways to make it better. Well, this is going to be a thread that I, your host, will periodically update with new information or suggestions regarding roleplay sessions and how to make them great.
Step 1
Get An Idea
Figure out just what you want to have a roleplay about.
Considering the location of this thread Homestuck shit seems to be a good place to start.
Or go crazy and do a college life AU.
You don't have to use your imagination, doing something that has been done before doesn't make it any less fun.
Step 2
Make a Thread
Go ahead and post your rp to the forum.
One thing to avoid is having a messy thread.
The first post can be used to keep track of availability, apps accepted, what you're looking for, etc...
Make sure you keep this first post updated.
Read that again.
The First post should also include all of the vital info for the rp, things that people are looking for to decide if it's for them.
Step 3
Make The App
A problem that I see a lot is that apps either ask way too much or way too little.
Having too much means that the characters are already fairly developed, they've been through some shit and are now participating in a new story.
Too much can also ensure that a player will stay, having put so much effort into a character.
Having too little, on the other hand leaves the player with room to do what they want, to develop a character through the rp.
Too little, however, can result in people joining in and flaking out.
I'll probably make an in detail app skeleton further down.
Step 4
Evaluate Characters
This is the part that I see a lot of new hosts struggling with.
A new host is glad to have anyone jumping on board and accepts every character that comes in.
That, my friends, is a mistake.
A character should be realistic and fit in with its surroundings.
For example, a weak, defenseless troll that flaunts mutant blood would be culled, unless they have a really good reason that they weren't.
End of story.
Along with this, know the culture surrounding the characters, and compare them with that.
