STEVEN UNIVERSE THREAD (onion friend spoips)

Argh yes loved it. Also it possibly helps add fuel to my fusion-theory that different 'deformities' mean different things about the single gems relationship with each other? (My main thing is that multiple sets of eyes means that the fusing-gems "don't see eye to eye" which I feel gets bonus points for being a pun.)

I adored Sardonyx. She was great and fantastic and a beautiful insight into Pearl, Garnet, (Ruby & Sapphire's relationship) and into how the gems feel about Garnet. But also she was just great and fantastic on her own (uh on her 'own').

The subtext was also amazing like woah seriously every allosexual adult (and probs at least some teens/ace-specs) picked up on that subtext as clearly as if it was text.

But no really this was a beautiful episode and I'm so glad a show felt comfortable ending on a downer like that without being a two-parter it's really beauitful. But, especially beautiful as a kids' show? I mean things don't always get fix. You can't always mend a friendship - and even if you can you might have to wait before even starting to mend things. It's good that kids' are getting shown this.

loved loved loved sardonyx- she's one of my faves. her voice and mannerisms are adorable And i included Garnet because yes, she is a fusion, but she's not one of the "giant woman" fusions that only get a few minutes of screentime- we didn't even know until jailbreak. the main reason is i was planning on a later poll about favorite fusions, though.

as for the pacing, i've gotten used to it to be honest. they really should extend it to 30 mins, but at the rate that they crank out episodes, it's pretty impressive. but i don't have cable so i'm not sure how they work with just 11 minutes? since each show block is 30 minutes, that would mean around 20 minutes of commercials, or 2 episodes back to back (which they dont do on stevenbombs.)

would it have killed them to have ruby just explode and yell at the top of her lungs at some point? all that muttering and struggling for the right words just felt like she was bottling up a lot of anger right there, and without a satisfying release to it it just feels hollow and unfufiled.

like... after the diner scene, when steven ruby and sapphire are leaving, have the two gems get into a breif arguement, like, "Calm down" "i will not calm down!" "Nothing will change untill you calm down" "i do not NEED to calm down" "You are only making it worse for yourse-" "I AM PERFECTLY CAAAAAAAAAAAAALM!" Ruby clenches her fists, screams at the top of her lungs, the camera shakes a bit, maybe a breif scene of someone far away reacting, and THEN sapphire starts crying.Ruby's pent up stress is released, she feels better, and immidiately starts appologizing to sapphire. Bam, better scene all around.

You didn't think that Ruby was frightening enough?

I don't know if this was why, or if there were other reasons, but her expressing her rage was already pretty scary. I don't mean horror scary (or... cat fingers scary) I mean any kid who's parents yell or any kid who went through/are going through a messy divorce are already scared of Ruby - no matter if she flat out yelled and shouted. (Seriously, struck a cord very deep).

Also, she did yell? What about "I'm an eternal flame, baby!"? I guess it would've been satisfying to see her shout some more, but she was having a very realistic and familiar reaction to her own rage. She hadn't been recently provoked, after all. This is long simmering rage after it's already boiled over. She's just still feeling hurt and Ruby is the kind of person that converts hurt into rage. So she's hurt and thus enraged but she's so hurt that she's got almost too much and she doesn't know what to do with it all. (Ruby is part of the person that said "I thought violence might be the answer", after all). She doesn't actually want to hurt Pearl - not more than her silent treatment is already doing. Pearl betrayed and hurt her but they're still allies (if not friends). And she cares about everyone else (Steven, Greg, Sapphire) to really hurt any of them - hence why she tried to apologise and take it all back when Steven got obviously upset and when Sapphire then got upset. So she's got all this energy and rage but there's nothing safe to unleash it at so she can't just let go and let it all out.


Idk. This one had a lot of familiar shit from my life. Resonated well and I bet there's a lot of kids thankful for it.

Onion is creepy, as always. I died from a mix of terror and laughter while watching that episode...

i love onion tbh he's so precious like... he just wants to be stevens friend man......... *weeps into onion doll* HE JUSTWANTS TO BE FRIENDS

a lot of people think Onion is very heavily coded/implied to be autistic- only talks to his mom, doesn't like eating food, has his own odd way of doing things- which i don't think is creepy at all! i thought he was quite cute.

i dunno, i might have just grown out of it too much but i'm autistic myself and i don't really see any autistic tendancies in him, idk. Could be that i have aspergers/high functioning autism, thus being "less autistic" then say the rainman, and potentually onion in this case, but i know i never put mice into my mouth, watched movies of my own birth, or ran over ketchup packets with a scooter before crashing into a car and starting a burning inferno of terror.

i never said stealing was autistic behavior broe. neither did i count it.
